Willow Smith genuinely shocked her mother Jada Pinkett Smith and grandmother Adrienne Banfield-Norris by revealing Monday that she used to self-harm on their new Facebook Watch series, Red Table Talk.
‘What? When were you cutting yourself? I didn’t see that part. Cutting yourself where?’ the 46-year-old Girls Trip star asked her daughter during episode two.
To an outsider, the 17-year-old songstress appeared to have every privilege and blessing growing up in Calabasas as the daughter of two famous actors boasting a combined $280M fortune.
It was after that whole Whip My Hair thing [in 2010] and I had just stopped doing singing lessons and I was kind of just in this gray area of, “Who am I? Do I have a purpose? Is there anything I can do besides this?”‘ the Malibu-born socialite recalled.
After the tour and the promotion and all of that, they wanted me to finish my album, and I was like, “No. I’m not gonna do that.”
‘And after all of that kinda settled down and it was like a kind of lull, I was just listening to a lot of dark music. It was just so crazy and I was plunged into this black hole, and I was cutting myself.
Willow – who only confessed her secret to one friend – pointed to a faint scar on her wrist and admitted she eventually stopped on her own five years ago because she realized ‘this is actually psychotic.’
‘I was experiencing so much emotional pain,’ Smith told her confused mother and grandmother.
‘But my physical circumstances weren’t reflecting that. [Cutting yourself] makes it feel real instead of like a ghost, like, in your mind.’
