A Michigan woman is putting Target on legal notice after she said she was forced to strip down in a back room to prove she didn’t steal a bikini from one of their stores.
Ashanae Davis told WXYZ-TV she was trying to leave the store when she was stopped by a loss prevention officer accusing her of stealing the bathing suit. She claims he cuffed her and took her to a back room where he and another officer watched her take off her clothes.
Her lawyers say showing them she did not have the bikini on was the only way to obtain her freedom.
According to The Root, she’s accusing the store of racial profiling in the May incident, one Davis described as humiliating. She and her attorneys are taking the claims of race and gender discrimination directly to Target to demand change.
Target says the employee involved has been terminated and they take allegations of mistreatment seriously. The company also says it’s addressing the situation with the security team at the store.
