An Arizona man is behind bars after he allegedly slit his 81-year-old grandmother’s throat because he was tired of taking care of her.
Brandon Smith, 30, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Helen Smith.
Helen, who suffered from dementia, was found brutally stabbed to death in the bathroom of the home that she and Smith had shared for three years in Chandler.
Smith told police that he became frustrated on Sunday morning after Helen urinated on herself, according to the arrest report.
When he took her to the bathroom for a shower, Smith slapped her in the face. Helen fell in the tub and lost consciousness.
Smith said it was in that moment he decided he didn’t want his grandmother to ‘live like this anymore’.
He went into the kitchen and grabbed a knife. Then he slit his grandmother’s throat in the tub.
Smith then called the police and reported that his grandmother was ‘not breathing’ and that it appeared ‘someone had beaten her up and sliced her throat’.
Officers arrived at the Club Cancun apartment complex around 3.30am and found Helen dead, but Smith had already fled.
Authorities were able to locate Smith and took him into custody. The arrest report states he was ‘under the influence of alcohol or drugs’ at the time of the incident.
Smith later told police that he had become frustrated because he was the only family member who took care of Helen.
Marca Whitehair, who lives in the apartment below Smith, said he could hear the cries of Helen’s relatives when they heard the news.
‘She was screaming, she was frightened,’ Whitehair told azfamily.com.
‘She just kept yelling, like, “Grandma’s gone, grandma’s gone!'”
